Kithulgala White Water Rafting

Kitulgala white water rafting is way much underrated. Yesterday (19th August 2012) during the first ever Leo Presidents camp of District 306 A2, I had the fantastic opportunity to experience the so called white water rafting, of which I had a faint idea. It was an experience filled with joy, mortal fear, thrill, competition, courage, team spirit. It will be an unforgettable experience for me.

What made it more thrilling was that we had to compete with five other rafting teams. We had to work together like one to make sure that our boat didn't turn upside down. There was an experienced guide who guided us with five basic rafting instructions; "forward", "backward", "release", "hold the rope", "fall back".

Since we managed to stabilize out boat throughout the five kilometers, we scored full marks. But we were given the opportunity to experience what it is like to fallout in the fast flowing river. Although it was fun to see other boats turn upside down, falling in to the fast flowing water was not funny at all. It reminded me what it would be like to drown. We desperately tried to hold on to what ever that is around us. Legs trying to reach the ground that is deep below, untouchable. It was a moment of truth for me who always trumpeted "I don't fear death".  Even though we were given a life-jacket and a helmet, the feeling of death did not escape us. The fast water current stuffed our noses making it impossible to breathe. It is too hilarious now to think how me and my fellow Leos behaved the moment we jumped out of the boat. Screaming "Budu Ammo, Beraganiyo (Dear mother, save me)" :) It was a sheer pandemonium. But that was for a very short time. The life jacket pulled us up. Nose cleared it self with after some coughing. I am floating on the river, head up, butts bumping on the rocks, which was as equally fun and thrilling as being on the boat.We floated down the stream holding each others hands making a circle. We sand a song too.

Without a doubt Sisira River Lounge can be given five stars. We stayed there for two days and they took us by their extreme hospitality, kindness and delicious food which included a scrumptious barbeque, milk rice, string hoppers, rice and curry and the desserts.

Government has already initiated a hydro power plant obstructing the water current of Kelani river that flows through Kitulgala. The amazing white water current will not be there for long. With the cessation of the war, Kitulgala water rafting became very famous among foreigners. Hotel and accommodation facilities have boomed along the banks of the white waters. Majority of the rafters were from foreign countries.

It is a must have adventure that every adventure lover must have. Well, Kitulgala white water rafting converted me in to adventure lover.I will surely go there once more.
