404 NOT FOUND at the root of the SharePoint site

Today, after completing 90% (which includes nearly 50 pages) of my pretty SharePoint communication site, SharePoint threw a scary "404 NOT FOUND" error. This is clearly a SharePoint blunder. The time is midnight, and I was hoping things would be alright once I wake up in the morning, but the inner geek in me did not want to depart to bed without a fight. You know that soul-sucking feeling of something "not right"?! I'm a constant victim.

404 NOT FOUND

Even though https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites/ (URL 1) did not work, https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites//SitePages/Home.aspx (URL 2) worked, which was a relief.

Here is my workaround:
  1. Go to the https://yourcompany.sharepoint.com/sites//SitePages/Forms/ByAuthor.aspx
  2. Select a random page, click the ellipsis icon (the vertical 3 dots) and select "Make homepage". Now, URL 1 started working. But it's not the homepage I wanted.
  3. Select the original home page under Created by: System Account (usually at the bottom of the page), click the ellipsis icon and select "Make homepage."
Ta-dah!
